Sirius Radio
Satellite Radio
Two companies have been offering the service for three years in the United States. The CRTC reviewed three proposals that would bring it and on June 16, 2005 surprised many observers by approving all of them. By December 2005, two satellite radio services Sirius Satellite Radio were on the air in this country. How is digital pay-radio different from regular radio? Regular radio is transmitted through either the or frequency modulation band. AM stations can broadcast their signal a fair distance, especially at night. It's not unusual to pick up AM stations hundreds of kilometres away on a clear night. The problem with the AM band is the quality of the signal is not that good. FM radio was developed to improve the quality of the signal. You can get rich stereo sound – but the signal can't be broadcast very far. With satellite – or digital – radio, you get near-CD quality sound. Your car radio can pick up the signal the same way your TV can pick up digital television channels. In addition, a satellite radio channel can carry extra information; while a song is playing you can find out, for instance, when the performer will be on tour in your area. A major component of Sirius’ business strategy has been to execute far-reaching and exclusive deals with big-name entertainers and personalities to create and build broadcast streams, from the ground up. Sirius has reached extensive deals with domestic diva Martha S tewart, E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt (aka Little Steven), Jimmy Buffett, and Eminem to executive produce streams on Sirius. By far the biggest of these deals was announced on October 6, 2004 when Sirius announced that it signed a five-year, $500-million agreement with shock jock Howard Stern to move his radio show to Sirius starting on January 9, 2006. The deal, which gave Sirius exclusive rights to Stern’s radio show, also gave Stern the right to build at least two full-time programming channels. Stern stated that his move was forced by the stringent regulations of the FCC whose enforcement was intensified following the Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime Show. Beginning with the announcement of his imminent departure, Stern began to complain of one of his employers, Infinity Broadcasting, as trying to impede the success of his departure. Stern thus followed in the footsteps of fellow shock jocks Opie and Anthony and Ron and Fez who jumped to XM Satellite Radio, and The Radio Chick (Leslie Gold) who can currently be heard on Sirius Channel 103, Sirius Stars. In his first major hire for Sirius, Stern brought on board Tampa, FL based shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge, fired by Clear Channel in a purge of high-profile shock jocks, to do a show on Sirius. In addition to the channel-programming deals, Sirius has also programmed a number of more conventional shows with well known personalities in a number of fields. These shows are hosted by personalities including skateboard legend Tony Hawk, seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, The B-52's lead singer Fred Schnieder, NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton and longtime New York City DJ “Cousin Brucie”, who was dropped by WCBS-FM after the station changed to its format from an oldies station to a “Jack” format. Generally the personalities act as DJs hosting shows with music they personally like. A reflected in the curved dash panel of his car as he makes an adjustment to the control panel of his satellite radio receiver in my radio ready for digital pay-radio signals? It's as ready as your television is, which is not very. Just like your TV, you need a special receiver to pick up the signals. The receiver can either be a small device that hooks up to a home stereo or boom box, or it can be a dedicated radio that's installed in your car. One of the American companies offering satellite radio recently introduced a handheld receiver that would cost about $350 US. Most receivers cost between $70 and $300 each, depending on the make, installation costs, and optional audio enhancement extras. On top of the cost of the receiver, you'll have to pay a monthly subscription fee. There are three of them. Two are partnerships with satellite radio providers and the third is an proposal.
